Feature Race

Fornaroli lead from the line with Mini close behind and Beganovic pressuring him around the outside of turn 1 for 2rd. Lindblad was up to 6th off the start and Inthraphuvasak was off into the gravel at turn 1 after contact with Tramnitz who got a puncture from the contact. Yellow flags were out Loake and Smith after they came together at turn 12 and both got beached in the gravel. Loake tried to go around the outside of Smith at turn 11 and could not pull it off  making contact with a pretty innocent Smith at his home Grand Prix. Fornaroli broke the DRS range from Mini in 2nd and was 1.4 second down the road when the Safety car was deployed for the incident with Smith and Loake. Mansell got a solid start and after going deep on the brakes at turn 1 making up a couple of places.
Lap 6- We were racing again Fornaroli backed the pack up before making his run at turn 11 sprinting away to try and stop any move into turn 1, Bedrin was under attack from Browning who after a great move in to turn 1 was past him and into 4th, Bedrin quickly lost another place to Lindblad after trying to defend the move from Browning putting him down to 6th. Mansell was side by side with Van Hoepen in to turn 11 with Mansell pass for 9th, Leon got passed Tsolov for 13th and Boya tried to defend up the inside of turn 3 but Goethe got passed him and was on the hunt for Bedrin in 6th. Wurz put a mega move on Van Hoepen for 10th and Leon and Stenshourne came together at turn 13 both going off and rejoining down the field but Leon suffered damage to his front wing. The action was frenetic and non stop!!
Lap 9 Fornaroli had not run away from Mini the way he did off the start and was still within DRS range of the Prema car.

Boya was very close to Goethe as lap 11 started with Mansell right behind them ready to pounce as they fought ahead. Wurz was now on the back of Van Hoepen(10th)  quickly passing him, followed by Montoya. Wurz was then straight on the back of Mansell and again with Montoya following him through they both passed Mansell just corners later. At the same time Boya finally got the move done on Goethe who had over worked his tyres early in the race and was suffering much earlier than the cars around him.
Lap 12 Beganovic closed and passed team mate Mini for 2nd place and was immediately closing on Fornaroli ahead. Mini was in trouble with Browning passing him just a lap after Beganovic did, he like Goethe having tyre issues with 11 laps to go.
Lap 14 Beganovic put in an incredible lap  to close the 1.2 second gap to Fornaroli passing him very quickly for the lead, Fornaroli didn't put up to much of a fight letting him past with the hope he could use the DRS to get back past later in the race. Montoya was past Wurz for 7th and was on a mission to do what he didn't yesterday and finish as far into the top 10 as physically possible.
After swapping places Montoya & Wurz continued their push forward together passing Boya one after the other and were up to 5th & 6th. Lindblad who had a great start had cooked his tyres to early causing him to dropped down the pack to 11th and out of the points.
Lap 18 Goethe passed Bedrin for 8th into turn 1 as all the drivers really started to struggle on their tyres trying to push them as far and as fast as possible.
Beganovic had not managed to make a gap to Fornaroli, and was now under pressure from the Pole man, who seemed to be biding his time before he made the move for the lead. Browning who had initially started to catch the front pair, had fallen back & out of DRS range but in to the path of Mini who was looking to get back in to the podium positions
Picture
Wurz passed Montoya to take 5th and pulled out a 3 second gap back to the Columbian in 6th.
Lap 22 Mini made the move on Browning for 3rd, going around the outside of the Williams Academy driver into turn 12 and was now 1.3 seconds back from the leading 2 cars. Fornaroli couldn't stay with the pace of Beganovic in his Prema and was 1.5 seconds back when they started the last lap of the race and after 1 more lap Dino Beganovic won his first race in FIA Formula 3 followed by Fornaroli in 2nd and Mini in 3rd. Browning brought the car home in 4th, Wurz and Montoya were 5th & 6th & Boya, Bedrin, Goethe, & Mansell completed the top 10. Lindblad despite a strong start to his race only managed 11th.

Sprint Race

Stenshorne had a god look at Van Hoepen at the first corner but didn't get a move into turn 1, Mansell locked up into the 1st turn as all 30 cars made their way through the 1st chicane safely. Browning got past Boya to gain a position, Fornarolli made a mega move around the outside of turn 9 to go past Tsolov and the battle between Browning and Boya continued with Boya reclaiming 6th.     .
Esterson was in trouble as Megatounif came past him and left him a sitting duck to the 2 Redbull liveried cars running behind him and as the DRS was activated on lap 2 Beganovic was straight on to the back of Tsolov and past as he started his push forward.
Van Hoepen was trying to pull out a gap at the front but Stenshorne was closing on him rapidly and on lap 3 he almost passed the ART round the outside of turn 4  but he just couldn't get it done till again he tried around the outside of turn 9 and got the job done and was into the lead. Mansell in 3rd was also under pressure from Goethe who was attempting the same move on Mansell as Stenshorne was trying on Van Hoepen ahead but unfortunately he stayed in 4th.

Picture
Picture
The battle for the front was not over as into turn 12 Van Hoepen was attacking and defending at the same time, bringing Mansell into the battle and as Van Hoepen over cooked the brakes into turn 12 he got back ahead of Stenshorne while Mansell could not stop the car and hit Stenshorne nose to rear almost taking them both out of the race. Lindblad, Geothe and Boya all now right on the back the 3 car battle for the lead.
As lap 4 started Stenshorne again made a move into turn 1 taking the lead and this time keeping it for just half a lap before Van Hoepen again came back at the HiTech driver and was back up to 1st.
Fornarolli had made it up to 9th after a tough start from 12th, Montoya was on the move climbing to 11th from 15th.
Lap 5 Stenshorne makes the move on Van Hoepen for the lead as Browning was in the pits with an issue. Geothe had a go on Lindblad but couldn't get it done and pushed himself back into the battle between Boya, Bedrin and Mini.
Lindblad passed Mansell after he locked up into turn 13 and lost momentum down the start finish straight and the move was done by the 1st turn. Goethe, Boya and Bedrin were still in a dog fight with Bedrin finding the edge of the gravel trap as the 3 tried to pass each other.
The cars from 2nd-9th were all within half a second of the car in front allowing the front 2 cars to put a gap between themselves and the following pack.
Fornroli ran wide and found the gravel trap which dropped him from 8th to 15th as Boya and Goethe passed Mansell who had now dropped from 3rd to 6th. Beganovic tried to take advantage of Bedrin struggles but thought better of the move.
Picture
Lap 14 a Safety car was needed after Inthraphuvasak and local boy Tommy Smith came together when the Thai driver pulled in front of Smith in the corner, cancelling out his aerodynamic grip and causing him to hit the PHM car of Inthraphuvasak leaving him stuck in the gravel trap, out of the race and in need of recovery.
Picture
Lap 17 the track went green Stenshourne went early managing to pull out a gap to Lindblad before they crossed the line to start racing again, Goethe and Mini battling round the lap, Beganovic put a great move on Wurz putting him off line and dropping him into the path of Bedrin, Dunne, Fornaroli and Mansell who all got past him dropping him back from 8th to 13th(a shame after he did such a good job before the restart).
Lindblad was within a second of Stenshourne in front but just couldn't find a way to pass as Mini was right on the back of Goethe frustrated he couldn't pass.
Lap 19 Boya tried around the outside of turn 10 but couldn't make the move almost dropping him back but he managed to stay ahead of Goethe and Mini behind. Beganovic had caught Montoya and tried round the outside of turn 4, taking 7th from the young Columbian.
The last lap was a battle from front to back Lindblad was still desperately trying to pass Stenshourne for the lead, Boya was having a look at Van Hoepen, Mini and Goethe were still going tyre to tyre every corner and Bedrin was looking at Montoya for 8th. Montoya went wide and let Bedrin and Dunne through dropping to 10th as they all crossed the line for the final time.
What a race, action from front to back, overtakes round the inside out outside of every corner and a grid of pure talent showing close racing does not mean big crashes!!!
Stenshourne did a mega job to get to and keep the lead from and advancing Lindblad who fought his way forward to finish on the podium. Despite his last lap drama Montoya had a brilliant race and deserved Driver of the Day if there was one in Formula 3.

Round 2 of the Formula 3 2024 Season brings the grid to Albert Park for the Australian Grand Prix. After a brilliant opening weekend in Bahrain that saw Arvid Lindblad storm to the first Sprint race win of the year in his Prema car and Luke Browning in his Hi-tech winning the Feature race and going top of the Championship table. Followed by Tramnitz in 2nd who had strong weekend, scoring well in both races.

Practice

We saw cars straight out on track when the pitlane lights went green, except the 3 ART & 3 Jenzer cars. The Jenzer cars waited in the pits for the first 10 minutes of the 45 minute session before all 3 cars came out leaving just the ART cars still to come out. Tommy Smith had a big lock up into turn 3 but kept the car going before returning to the pits for new medium rubber.
32 minutes on the clock and finally with all the cars on track yellow flags were out at turn 14 for Cian Sheilds who had lost the rear and hit the barriers at the final corner and ultimately the session was Red flagged to recover his car, just as we started to see some competitive times and before any of the 3 ART cars could set a time. When the session was stopped Mini was top, Beganovic 2nd, Wurz 3rd Goethe 4th, Loake, Wisnicki, Montoya 5th,6th & 7th, Sophia Florsch, Dunne & Sheilds completed the top 10 in 8th, 9th & 10th. Lindblad had been 3rd before having his lap deleted.

22 minutes on the clock and the session resumed with all the cars going straight out on track. Montoya was looking fast right out of gate but was still a long way off the fastest, Dunne went top of the times on his first flying lap till he was beaten by Beganovic and then Mini who reclaimed 1st.
Boya was the next man to challenge for fastest as he went purple in sector 1, until being beaten by Dunne and  Mini who again found time in the first sector and beat both cars times & go 7 tenths faster than any other car in his Prema.
15 minutes to go Mini was fastest, Beganovic 2nd Fornarolli 3rd Mansell 4th, Leon 5th.
Championship leader Luke Browning went 3rd fastest on his first flying lap of Practice as Boya & Dunne found the run off area at turn 6 being forced to cross the grass.
As the closing 10 minutes of the session ticked down we saw a lot of traffic start to form with times coming in thick and fast, Charlie Wurz jumped to 7th followed by Lindblad who went 4th fastest.
2 minutes to go and Nichola Tsolov hit Dunne in a bizarre incident the brought out the Red Flag. We saw Dunne 'weaving' to heat his tyres, Tsolov closed quickly on Dunne while he was doing so almost hitting him, only to then pull along side and veer right, into the side of Dunne in what could only be described as a deliberate act, causing Dunne to hit the barrier.
With only 2 minutes left on the clock and Dunne's car needing to be recovered the session was not resumed.

Qualifying

Geothe lead the pack out as the lights went green for Qualifying in Melbourne, traffic around the Albert park track with all 30 cars on track was a real issue and getting that banker lap in early was a challenge.
Ramos found himself in the gravel trap of turn 10 but managed to keep the car going to carry on. Fornaroli went top early in the session, followed by Mini & Beganovic in 2nd & 3rd. Lindblad found the gravel at turn 12 on his next flying lap, Goethe put himself up to 4th fastest, Browning beating him to go 3rd, Mansell, Bedrin & Lindblad all improved on their laps as the times tumbled through out the field.
15 minutes on the clock Fornaroli still has the fastest time and provisional feature race pole, Championship leader Browning was in 3rd hoping for a good Qualifying as we saw the cars return to the pits to prepare for their final runs of Qualifying to set the reverse top 12 Sprint Race and the Sunday Feature race. 7 minutes on the clock and we saw cars making their preparation laps to start their last flying laps of the session
Picture
Picture
Browning was the first man to set a fast lap but he was half a second down on Fornaroli in the first sector, Mansell, Mini and Meguetounif were all going faster till with 4 minutes left of  Qualifying Sami Meguetounif brought out a Red flag after a big hit coming out of the final corner, he carried to much speed into turn 14 and found the barrier on the outside.  Unfortunately for most of the field the Red flag came out just as they were on their fast laps meaning they had to bail on laps that would have seen them improve. Luckily for Mini he set his time before the Red flag was called putting him top ahead of Fornaroli in 2nd, Tsolov who received a 3 place grid penalty for his conduct in Practice earlier in the day was in 3rd, Championship leader Luke Browning was in 4th and Stenshorne who got a cracking lap in was 5th fastest.
The session got going again at 14.39 local time with 4 minutes 33 on the clock for 29 cars to get in their fastest laps of Qualifying, it was set to be a frenetic end to the session with the last man to cross the line being the fastest historically at Albert Park.

Traffic was crazy and we saw lots of cars desperatey trying to find space to start their flying laps, Fornaroli was first to start his, and he went purple in the 1st sector Mini came back at him in the middle sector also going purple with Beganovic going very fast in his Prema car. Fornaroli went fastest as he crossed the line as we saw Loake hit the wall at turn 14 seriously damaging his Rodin Motorsport car. Goethe managed to go 3rd fastest, Mini could not beat Fornaroli and went 2nd, Beganovic followed him across the line to go 3rd, Tsolov went 4th ahead of Goethe but with his 3 place grid penalty wouldn't stay there. Browning was setting Purple sectors on his final lap but it was only good enough for 4th till Bedrin went ahead of him to take 4th and push Browning down to 5th. Yellow flag flew in sector 1 for Loake's stranded Rodin as the final laps were set meant that even the cars who crossed the line in time couldn't set another lap but touche to Loake for keeping the car going with a badly damaged rear suspension and clearing the start finish straight so the other cars could complete their laps.
After the session had ended we saw multiple drivers lose laps to track limits and this is how the grid for Sunday looks.
