Hamilton and Russell Top 2nd Practice for Mercedes

29/2/2024

Picture
Lewis Hamilton topped the 2nd practice session of today with his team mate George Russell 0.206 behind. Alonso took 3rd with Sainz and Piastri 4th & 5th. Max Verstappen finished 6th with his team mate 9th. Norris ended the session last after making a mistake on his qualifying run. After doing their qualifying simulations the Redbull was almost half a second down on the Mercedes but the Redbull showed its strength in the long run pace and unexpectedly Oscar Piastri looked strong over his long runs on the Soft tyre matching the Redbull 1'36 pace.
After this practice session qualifying tomorrow night is looking wide open

Ricciardo Tops 1st Practice

Daniel Ricciardo topped the times of todays 1st Practice in Bahrain on the Soft tyres. Only Ricciardo, his RB team mate Tsunoda and the 2 Mclaren cars ran the Soft tyres with the fastest Medium tyre runner being Fernando Alonso in 5th with this Aston Martin.
Max Verstappen ended the session in 6th and complained multiple times about the gear shifts of his Redbull. His team mate Sergio Perez finished in 12th behind the Ferrari of Sainz while his team mate Leclerc finished in 8th behind the Mercedes of George Russell and Bottas got his Stake Sauber into the top 10 behind Hamilton in 9th.
It was a session you could have been mistaken for testing with Zhou running aero rakes before his brakes and the rear of the car prevented him doing any meaningful running. The Williams boys had a good consistent session that saw Sargeant keep his nose clean and focused on having a much less eventful 2024 than he did 2023. The Alpines struggled and finished 17 & 18th only faster than the 2 HAAS cars whole still seem to be bringing up the back of the grid.

After a surprising result in Practice 2 and the Mercedes finding some real speed we hadn't see so far in 2024, it was a hotly anticipated Practice 3 before the cars show their true pace in Qualifying later today.

Practice 3

It was a very slow start to practice with nobody going out until 10 minutes had passed and even then we only saw Lewis Hamilton on track till we saw the 2 Ferrari's come out wit 45 minutes of the session remaining soon joined by the 2 Stake Sauber cars and Alex Albon.
It wasnt till 30 minutes were left on the clock we saw more cars on track and come competitive laps started to be completed.
Russell went top, faster than the Ferrari's first efforts, Alonso went purple for his first run as Norris made a mega catch when his Mclaren snapped on him over a curb.
Perez and Verstappen were the only cars out doing Hard tyre runs so far in the session.

22 minutes to go and we started to see some Qualifying simulation laps. Tsuonda put his car 4th after his first flying lap, Russell went 2nd and the Redbulls returned to the pits to put of some soft rubber.
Perez set the fatsest time on his first lap out on the Softs qyickly beaten by Vertsappen on the same tyre.
Stroll jumper to 3rd untill team mate Alonso went fastest pushing stroll down to 4th. Norris despite a mistake in sector 2 put his mclare 3rd fastest and team mate Piastri went 4th until Russell majinally beat his time and slpit the Mclarens on the timing screen.
After all the Qualifying runs it was a mixed up final order. Sainz kept the top spot at the end of Practice 3, followed in 2nd by Alonso jusy 0.141 behind the lead Ferrari, Verstappen was 3rd, Leclerc, 4th, Norris 5th, Russell 6th and Piastri 7th. Hamilton only managed 12th, beaten by Hulkenberg, Stroll and Ricciardo.
It really was a quiet session, and gave us no more of a clue who will top Qualifying than we started testing with. But onto Qualifying to see how they really shake out when the sandbags come off.

Qualifying

Q1

It was a slow start to Qualifying with just the 2 Ferarri's and 2 Apline's on track untill the clock counted down to 12 minutes when the rest of the grid came out to set their laps. The Ferrari's attempted to set a fast enough lap on the Medium tyre but quickly realized it wasn't going to work and put for Softs to join the rest of the cars out on track.
Picture
After every ones  first laps it was Sainz on top followed by Vertsappen and Norris.
3 minutes remaining and the track was full to capacity as with all 20 cars trying to get through to the next round. Piastri could only manage 8th fastest, Bottas got his Sauber up to 11th but wasn't safe from the drop zone with his rivals all improving. Magnussen jumped to 10th as Albon beat Piastri to go 8th. Stroll set a stonking lap going 2nd fastest, Ricciardo and Tsunoda managed to get out of the knock out 5 but pushed both Sauber drivers in it. Leclerc pushed and his Ferrari went 5th but team mate Sainz set a blistering lap to go fastest.

Q2

Unlike Q1 all the cars were straight out for the start of Q2, Magnussen was the first man to start a lap with 11 minutes to go.
Mclaren were the first of the top 5 cars to set a time and both drivers made mistakes on their laps and despite going 1st and second fastest as soon as the other drivers completed their laps the Mclaren's dropped down the order and after every one had completed their first laps it was Verstappen top, Perez 2nd and Norris 3rd Piastri.
Picture
4 minutes to go and its go time as all the cars came onto the track, Hulkenberg set a brillaint lap to go 2nd fastest, Piastri could only manage 4th, before Norris beat his time and took the 4th spot. Leclerc didn't have the best last run but luckily he had time to go again because he clearly had the pace as on his 2nd attempt he went fastest of all in Q2 beating Verstappens best by 0.209s
Russell and Hamilton cut it fine and were in the drop zone when their laps started but both did enough to get through to the top 10 shoot out by going 4th (Hamilton) and 6th (Russell).

When the 2 Mercedes crossed the line and improved, it knocked Tsunoda and Stroll down both cars we thought had the speed to get through.

Q3

Again all the car went straight out but with the exception of Alonso who only had the tyres to complete 1 flying lap in the top 10 shoot out so waited in the pits till the other cars had completed their first timed runs.
Norris and Piastri ran scrubbed soft tyres for their first runs, Piastri didnt pull together the best lap while team mate Norris had a great lap only 0.2 off Verstappens 1 run time on a new set of Softs, after the first round of runs it was Verstappen fastest Leclerc 2nd and after a great lap Russell in 3rd.
Alonso came out for his run with 4 minutes on the clock with the track to himself and set a solid time to go 3rd ahead of Russell.
Picture
Picture
2 minutes on the clock and the final push of Q3 began. The Mclarens lead the way again, this time on a set of new soft tyres but Lando made a mistake in sector 1 losing 4 tenths, he managed to make up .2 in sector 2 but just couldn't improve anymore than 6th but it is looking promising for the Mclaren's if they can get a clean lap. Hulkenberg couldn't better his 10th place, Russell did what Norris couldn't and put together a great lap to end the day in 3rd, Hamilton was disappointed with 8th being his best before being pushed down to 9th by Leclerc's stella lap to put himself 2nd by just over 2 tenths while his team mate finished forth fastest.
It was a much closer Qualifying, than anyone expected despite it being the same face at the top of the times, if the others car are as close to Verstappen on race pace as they are in Qualifying then we could see some great racing for the lead. Despite not showing their true pace in Qualifying the Mclaren's showed really solid pace on their soft tyre long runs in Practice 2 and were the closest to max of any team meaning they could take the fight to Redbull in the race in a way they couldnt in Qualifying!!

Official F1 Journal Formula 1 Grand Prix Round Up- Bahrain

27/2/2024

It's here!! Finally!!! The first race of the 2024 Formula 1 season! We have all waited patiently and we can now really see how all the team have shaken out. The only real change this year for the race is to when the DRS is activated. Previously it wasn't active till lap 3. In 2024 DRS is available at the end of the 1st lap making it harder for the man in 1st to run away as quickly.
Lets get down to business and recap the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix
All car started on the Soft Tyre
Lights out and Max Vertsappen was off! Leclerc was along side the Redbull before having to let Max take the racing line in to turn 1, the 2 fought up till turn 4 where Max started to pull ahead and never looked back!
Russell was hot on the heals of the leaders battle and once Leclerc's attack on Verstappen he was immediately on the defence from Russell. Sainz and Perez got away well but had fallen back from the front 3 in 4th & 5th, Alonso kept his 6th place off the start. Norris and Piastri had a great 1st lap inter team battle with Piastri very nearly getting past his more experienced team mate to escape an advancing Hamilton down in 9th. Despite getting his HAAS in 10th in Qualifying Hulkenberg out braked himself into turn 1 and hit the rear of Stroll's Aston Martin making him spin in the middle of the pack and well down the order and Hulkenberg himself needing to pit for damage and new tyres and at the back of the pack.
Picture
Picture
By the start of Lap 2 and the activation of the DRS Verstappen was already 9 tenth down the road from Leclerc as Sargeant made a great move on Ricciardo for 14th.
Lap 3 Norris passed Alonso for 6th place, as Russell made a mighty move around the outside of turn 4 passing the Ferrari of Leclerc for 2nd place bringing Perez with him but the Redbull couldn't get the move done till 4 laps later in to turn 1 pushing Leclerc down to 5th and into the path of team mate Sainz, eager to get past him and chase down the Redbull's. Leclerc was complaining over the radio that the front end of the car was a real problem and the evidence was easy to see as we saw him lock up time and time again all over the track making defending himself from his much faster team mate much harder.
Piastri passed a much less feisty Fernando than we are used to seeing, choosing not to fight either Mclaren over take.
Lap 7 Verstappen  had extended his lead to 4.9 seconds with Russell unable to match the Redbull pace. Magnussen was having a strong start to the race as he over took Zhou for 12th
Sainz was relentless in his pursuit of Leclerc who put up a great fight but as soon as he lost the benefit of the DRS from Perez ahead he was a sitting duck for Sainz who was driving like he had a point to prove!
Lap 10 Hamilton finally got past Alonso and again we didn't see Alonso put up any kind of fight, its not a Fernando this writer has ever seen and I've watched his whole career.  We momentarily saw a yellow flag for Sargeant going into the run off area of turn 1 but he got going again and the track was back to green.
Lap 11 job done for Sainz as he went along side his team mate at turn one and force Leclerc to bail off the racing line and Sainz was gone and off to catch Perez in 3rd.
Picture
Lap 12 we saw the first round of pit stops begin Russell was the first of the front runners to pit(lap 12) hoping to play the under cut but Redbull  covered them off bringing Perez in just 1 lap later
Lap 14 Perez caught the Mercedes of Russell and passed in to turn 4 ( a very popular overtaking spot for the F1,2 & 3) and the Mexican was up to 2nd and determined to hunt down his team mate. Sainz was the last of the top 5 to pit and was back behind his team mate Leclerc who the Ferrari team pit first despite Sainz being the lead car. But Sainz was on  a roll today and regardless of being dropped back in the stops it only took him another 4 laps to over take his team mate and George Russell who was struggling with needing to cool an over heating power unit. Russell told Sky Sports F1 after the race that it was a case of choosing the wrong cooling package for the race and not an inherent PU problem. Hamilton also suffered the same issue during the race being told to lift and coast to keep temperatures down.
The racing settled down for a while as the whole field started to manage their Hard tyres and extend their stint as far as possible.
Lap 31 Leclerc had put a meaningful dent in the gap between himself and Russell in 4th almost getting the gap down to DRS range when Russell dove into the pits to swap his old Hard tyres for fresh ones on lap 32, followed by Norris on lap 34 after he had closed the gap to Leclerc in the hopes of using the undercut to pass the Ferrari, but it wasn't to be and when Leclerc pit on lap 35 along side Norris' team mate Piastri, he came back out well in front of the lead Mclaren but much closer to the Mercedes of Russell. Thanks to a slow stop for Piastri he was released into the path of Hamilton at turn 1 and the 7 time World Champion passed the young Aussie at Turn 1.
The whole field again chose the Hard tyre except the 2 Redbulls and the RB of Ricciardo who decided to end the race on Softs. Albon was also suffering with an over heating Mercedes engine but managed it beautifully to still maintain a decent position for most of the race.

Picture
Lap 41 found Leclerc much happier with the front end of his car and chasing down 4th place man Russell. They had a great lap by lap battle until on lap 46 Russell went deep into turn 11 allowing Leclerc to slip past and off down the road, pushing George back to 5th and in front of an advancing Lando Norris.
Picture
Norris did a valiant job of chasing down George Russell but couldn't get the gap down under a second and ended the race behind the very hot Mercedes.
The RB tried a driver swap in the closing laps of the race to try and get at least 1 car past Kevin Magnussen's HAAS, much to the disgust of Yuki Tsunoda who was unhappy with being told to give his place to his team mate when he was running so close to the car in front, he deliberately waited to let Daniel past, annoying the usually jovial Australian and when Ricciardo could neither catch or pass the HAAS either Yuki made what could only be described as a very aggressive lunge up the inside of Ricciardo almost taking both cars out of the race on the final lap.
Max had won the race by 22 seconds over team mate Perez, Sainz closed slightly on the 2 Redbulls at the end but finshed 2.6 behind Perez and 25 seconds off the lead. After their car issues at the beginning Leclerc and Russell were happy with 4th & 5th over all and despite only managing 6th & 8th the Mclaren boys were positive putting the less than ideal result down to the track not suiting the car and were sure there is more in the car to find.
Both Aston Martin scored points today but compared to this race a year ago I don't think they will be celebrating 9th & 10th after going in to the season with hopes for better, although considering Stroll spun at the 1st corner 10th was pretty decent.
Zhou had a great race after pitting early for  his 1st stop helped him up the order, holding on to 11th to take home a great result for Sauber. Magnussen also finished far higher than expected, making the first corner incident for Hulkenberg all the more annoying when the race pace of the HAAS looked far stronger than 2023. Albon nursed his Williams home with a very warm engine and a laundry list of issue but non the less despite the troublesome race Alex did very well to come home 15th. To say Gasly was unhappy with his Alpine car would be an understatement, with his team radio being a mixture of insults about the car and expletives, a slow 1st pitstop only added insult to injury.
Picture
Was it a great race? No but we did see some really brilliant racing at times? Yes and we got to see a truer representation of where the cars shake out in relation to the Redbull of Verstappen.
Onto Jeddah next weekend where hopefully we will see another close battle for pole on Friday and some racing past the 1st lap that involves Max Verstappen!!!

Official F1 Journal Formula 1 Thursday Round Up- Bahrain

Welcome 1 and all to the 2024 Formula 1 season!! After what felt like an endless off season, that one could argue was as action packed as a lot of the on track escapades of 2023 and the 3 days of sandbagging that was 2024 testing, its great to be on track and enjoying the sights and sounds of the Formula 1 circus in all its glory.
So lets get into all the action from Practice 1 & 2 at Bahrain on a Thursday for the 1st time.

Practice 1- Very Windy    All started on Medium Tyre

The HAAS cars lead the field out followed closely by the Mclaren's, Stake cars and both Alpines. Because of the none representative conditions of Practice 1 many of the teams will use this session to continue their testing from a week ago and this waas illustrated by the Stake Sauber car of Guanyu Zhou coming out of the Pitlane running aero rakes to gather data but unfortunately for him and the team he was only half way round the Sakhir track before he radioed saying his brakes were not working, this issue would hamper him for the whole session and meant he got very limited running.
The wind was making running tricky for all the cars and we saw it catch out Leclerc at Turn 4 the lap before he topped the times, but that was short lived as Hamilton quickly beat his time by 0.034.
Picture
Picture
51 minutes remaining and we saw Verstappen take to the track for the first time and immediately top the times just as Sainz had beaten his team mates time. Leclerc went for another fast lap but could only mange 2nd but was quickly beaten by Perez in the number 2 Redbull.
51 minutes n the clock and we started to see the Mercedes find their speed and the top spot swap between Russell, Hamilton and Verstappen, while Alonso put his Aston Martin 4th.
40 minutes to go and running was consistent and again we can only admire the reliability of the 2024 grid, although Verstappen was not happy with his gear changes complaining over the radio that his up and down shifts were making the whole car jump.
As the track went quiet after some long running the Mclarens who had spent a fair amount of time in the garage making changes came back out and started their Soft tyre running with Piastri going top by almost half a second before Norris went faster yet also on the Soft tyre beating his team mates time by 0.212. The RB's also decided it was time for the Soft tyre runs and on his first run Ricciardo set the fastest time beating the Mclaren of Norris by jusy 0.032. Bottas had also done his first soft tyre run but could only manage 8th fastest.
10 minutes left of the session and everyone was out on track with the exception of Bottas and most cars were doing their long run high fuel, data collection runs before they go into the darkness of Practice 2 a much more representative session of Qualifying and the Race(in the dark). Zhou came out briefly before returning to the pits. Sargeant had a very quiet but relaxed session and was faster over the session than both HAAS' and Alpine cars. Stroll couldn't find the time in his Aston Martin that team mate Alonso have.
The session ended and Perez found himself down in 12th with Sainz ahead of him in 11th while his team mate was still unhappy with the way his Redbull was down shifting. Bottas managed to put his Stake Sauber in to 10th behind former team mate Lewis Hamilton on the slower Medium tyres. Vertsappen finished the session in 6th behind Alonso and the Mclaren's & RB's and Russell & Leclerc finished in 7th & 8th.

Practice 2     Very Wind      all starting on Soft tyres

Bottas lead the grid out of the pits followed by everyone except Max Verstappen who chose to wait in the garage for a further 8 minutes while the others started their data collection.
Hulkenberg set the first time that was quickly beaten by Bottas, Magnussen and Sainz, Perez beat the time of the 1st Ferrari before being beaten by its sister car just seconds later but to every ones surprise Lewis Hamilton beat all of there time by over 8 tenths on the soft tyres. Alonso pushed the rest back further by going 2nd behind and Stroll went 5th as we saw the defending World Champion leave the pits. We all watched Max's first lap expecting him to do his usual job of setting the pace from the moment her touched the track, but that wasn't to be the case and the best he could manage in his Redbull was 4th a head of team mate Perez but a long way off the Mercedes of Hamilton. As the wind continued to pick up we saw Leclerc and Magnessen get caught out at the last corner hurting their lap times
Picture
Picture
36 minutes to go and we saw the cars begin their Qualifying simulations and it was our first glimpse of their true pace.
Sainz was the first to go for a qualifying lap followed by Piastri and Norris, Hulkenberg set his time first and jumped upto 2nd in his HAAS, Norris made a mistake in the first sector so abandoned the only qualifying simulation he would attempt leaving him slowest of the fastest laps but team mate Piastri and Sainz in his ferrari were on great form, Sainz going 2nd fastest and Piastri 3rd as Hamilton increased his lead over the others in 1st. Verstappen could only put together a lap good enough for 4th behind Piastri until Russell went 2nd and Alonso took 3rd fastest leaving the 3 time world champion in 6th while team mate Perez was down in 10th behind Leclerc in 9th.

After the excitement of the Qualifying preparation and getting to see some of the cars true pace it was onto the Race simulations on the soft and medium tyres and we didn't see the time change must more but the eagle eyed of you may have noticed that the 2 stand out cars on the long run pace were the Redbull and a little surprisingly the Mclaren of Piastri, who was matching the 1'36 second lap the Redbull's were managing, showing really strong race pace from the young Australian and his Mclaren.
Hulkenberg's time put him well inside the top 10 in 6th but we sw last year that the HAAS had good 1 lap pace but needed to improve it's race pace, Albon and Sargeant had another positive, uneventful practice ending in 11th and 13th and showing the Williams is far from a back row car this year. The Alpines struggled again today but seem consistently faster than the Stake Saubers and on long runs the HAAS car.
Picture
But by far the biggest head line of the session was the one lap speed of the Mercedes car, Zak Brown inferred that they had turned the Mercedes engine up for Practice 2 a change Mclaren hadn't made....yet and there was more speed in the papaya car.
Only Qualifying is going to show us the pure pace of the cars but its safe to say after P2 we are all far more excited about the possibility Redbull will not run away like we had all anticipated.
On to tomorrow for Practice 3 and the 1st Qualifying of 2024.

So all we really know is that we watched 3 days of sandbagging and that the Redbull is still best car. Other than that, on the eve of the 1st Race week of 2024 we know very little about how the rest of the top 4 will shake out or who will top the midfield. How ever the cards will fall we only have 6 days till those red light go out and we see in earnest who is capable of what.
