The usually jovial Daniel Ricciardo shared his thoughts about how Formula 1 handled the incident playback of his fellow driver and friend Roman Grosjean, and he didn't hold back for good reason.
Daniel Ricciardo "I want to express my disgust and disappointment with Formula 1. The way the incident with Grosjean was broadcast, over and over, the replays, over and over, it was completely disrespectful and inconsiderate for his family, for all of our families watching. Were gona go race again in an hour and every time we look on the tv its a ball of fire, and his cars cut in half. I mean we can see that tomorrow, we don't need to see that today. For me it was entertainment and their playing with all of our emotions and I thought it was pretty disgusting. Hopefully some other drivers have spoken up, but if that's not really how we all feel ill be very surprised!" I know that everyone reading this will have seen so many photos and playbacks of the incident as this is what the media do. They are there to showcase something like this. Watching the race it was terrifying to see it unfold on tv, and I strongly agree with Ricciardo as to roll the video back time and time again was incredibly uncomfortable to watch, let alone what his and other drivers families would be feeling. I am sure that many of you will feel the same. Always ones to focus on the positives though, Romain is well and recovering in hospital where it is expected that he will be discharged tomorrow. Gunther Steiner has announced that Pietro Fittipaldi will replace Romain in this weekends Sakhir Grand Prix to allow the driver to recover and hopefully be back for the last race of the season. Steiner and Fittipaldi's thoughts are below. Gunther Steiner :“After it was decided that the best thing for Romain (Grosjean) was to skip at least one race, the choice to put Pietro (Fittipaldi) in the car was pretty easy. Pietro will drive the VF-20 and he’s familiar with us having been around the team for the past two seasons as a test and reserve driver. It’s the right thing to do and it’s obviously a good opportunity for him. He’s been patient and was always prepared for this opportunity – and now it has come. That’s why we want him in the car and I’m sure he’ll do a good job. It’s very demanding being called in at the last minute, but as I said, I think it’s the right thing to do for Haas F1 Team.” Pietro Fittipaldi:“Most importantly I’m happy Romain (Grosjean) is safe and healthy. We’re all very happy his injuries are relatively minor after such a huge incident. Obviously, it’s not an ideal set of circumstances to get my first opportunity to compete in Formula 1, but I’m extremely grateful to Gene Haas and Guenther Steiner for their faith in putting me behind the wheel this weekend. I’ve been with the team a lot this season, both trackside and working on simulator sessions, so I’m familiar with the team’s operating procedures on a grand prix weekend. It’s going to be exciting to make my first career start in Formula 1 – I’ll be giving it my all and I look forward to starting in free practice on Friday in Bahrain.”

Callum Ilott will return to Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN when he takes the wheel of the team’s C39 in next month’s test session in Abu Dhabi. Illot was meant to drive the car in Free Practice 1 at the German Grand Prix but, practice was called off due to the weather conditions that prevented the Medical Helicopter being able to take off.
The 22-year-old who is currently in second place in the Formula 2 championship , just 22 points behind championship leader Mick Schumacher. He also has previous experience of Formula One machinery, having driven for the team in a test session in Barcelona in 2019. Formula 2 is heading into its 2 remaining races which will be staged in Bahrain on November 28/29 and December 5/6. Callum Ilott: “I am really looking forward to being in the car again in Abu Dhabi and I am grateful to Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and the Ferrari Driver Academy for this opportunity. Any chance to drive a Formula One car is important: it’s a way to grow my experience, not just in the cockpit, but also working with the team: the engineers and crew are among the best in the world and there is so much to learn from them, so I am going to make it count.” Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and CEO Sauber Motorsport AG: “Callum is one of the most promising young drivers coming through the ranks, as his performance in F2 has shown this year. He was unlucky to miss out on a chance to show his ability last month, when FP1 was called off at the Nürburgring, so he thoroughly deserves his outing with the team in Abu Dhabi. His attitude and work ethic have left a very positive impression with the team when he tested with us last year and testing with him in Abu Dhabi is something we are really looking forward to.” Lewis Hamilton looks set to wrap up his 7th World Championship this weekend but the Champion hasn't wrapped up his new contract with the dominating team.
Toto has previously mentioned that they will look to conclude everything after Hamilton has wrapped up the championship. When asked if they were feeling cornered now that Hamilton is about to equal Schmacher's record he explained; “No, not at all cornered. It’s a good dependence on each other; we would like him in the car, and I think he wants to drive the Mercedes because it’s competitive, so no, I think there is a good balance,” He also said that he is not going to give away a date just yet other wise he will be bombarded with the same question every race. “Yeah, I don’t want to drop a date here because if I do everybody’s going to ask at every single race, but this is what we agreed,” he said. “I think it was important to make sure we had both titles secured and then have a more relaxed approach to the discussion about the future." Wolf's position at Mercedes is another talking point of the grid as to whether or not he stays in his current position. “I believe that each of us has a certain shelf life as a team principal because it’s simply not sustainable to do a few hundred races and be the best [version of] you that started on the journey,” he said. “It is a job that involves being in an aeroplane, on 20 or so races, and coming back on Monday you have an office job. And I dd 250 hotel nights last year and 500 hours of flying and it is certainly not something that I want do for the rest of my life. But I take enjoyment in what I do and I certainly don’t want to step away from the Mercedes team,” he explained. Hamilton recently said in an interview that he doesn't know what his future holds. Is this him just being Magnanimous or is he planning an exit from a sport he has dominated for the past 7 years. He has a team set up in Extreme E, Electric SUV Off Road Racing, which starts next March. How will he be able to run a team while competing for his 8th Championship next year. Or does he stay on to further cement his position in the history books by winning a further 1 or 2 championships? What do you think? (Image Courtesy of Formula E)
Extreme E is the New Radical Off Road Motorsport which will see Electric SUV's competing in remote ecosystems around the world, which aims to shed light on environmental issues. The one goal which is shared between the two Series, is their founding purpose to counteract climate change by speeding up the adoption of electric vehicles. Formula E operated the open-wheel single-seater race cars in the FIA World championship whereas Extreme E will see Electric SUV's compete in some of the most testing, off road conditions in the world. Both Lewis Hamilton and ex team mate and forma World Champion Nico Roseberg have both entered teams into the Extreme E. Lets hope that this becomes a battle like we used to see on the F1 tracks. With Formula E's minority investment, also comes with a seat on the board of directors for Extreme E which will be held by Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle. The two businesses will remain independent but the collaboration between their leadership, Extreme E's CEO Alejandro Agag, will allow for a strategic partnership. Formula E will be back as of January 16th 2021 where it will be starting of in Santiago for its debut Grand Prix. Extreme E will be launching its first season which will open in Saudi Arabia on 21st March 202. Thoughts of the CEO's of both Motorsports below. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF FORMULA E; BOARD DIRECTOR OF EXTREME E JAMIE REIGLE "Formula E and Extreme E stand out as sports founded with purpose. As we both race for better futures, a strategic partnership with Extreme E is a natural progression for Formula E. We are joining forces in our fight against climate change, while each continuing on our independent and complementary sporting paths. It’s an honour for me to be invited to join Extreme E’s Board of Directors and I’m committed to delivering the greatest impact for both businesses as we light up the world with the transformative power of electric racing." CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, EXTREME E; FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN OF FORMULA E ALEJANDRO AGAG "It has always been my intention to have Formula E and Extreme E working closely together, spreading the message of electrification, environment and equality. The two series are very different but have a shared purpose as they fight alongside one another to counteract climate change. I’d like to welcome Jamie to the Board of Extreme E and look forward to continuing our work together, this time to capture the momentum and maximise the potential of Extreme E." |
